You will be identifying, assessing and managing personnel security risks as part of the Directorate of Defence Security with the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF).

This is a people focused role which requires continuous engagement with people going through challenging circumstances and determining pathways which will directly affect their lives.

As a senior advisor within the team, you will take on more complex and challenging cases and provide coaching and mentoring to your less experienced colleagues.


Duties for this role will include:

  • Briefing and debriefing command and/or management on existing cases.
  • Performing case interviews to understand situations and determine outcomes.
  • Writing Security Management Plans to support case decisions.
  • Liaising with internal and external stakeholders to gather information to assist with cases.
  • Supporting and assisting other team members are required.
Travel around NZDF Camps and Bases is required. You will need a Class 1 Full Driver's Licence.

Ideally, you will also have:

  • Experience in undertaking complex investigations, risk identification, assessment, and management processes within a government environment.
  • The ability to critically analyse complex information and make sound, effective recommendations to decision makers.
  • Experience with investigative interviews and an understanding of different interview techniques.
  • A Bachelor's Degree in Psychology, Behavioural Science, Security, Policing or proven related experience.
  • A working knowledge of the New Zealand Protective Security Requirements (PSR); and
  • The ability to work with discretion and confidentiality, while dealing with a wide range of difficult topics and situations.

The Directorate of Defence Security (DDS) provides a sustainable and credible security organisation primarily focussed on NZDF's domestic security environment through the provision of a range of protective security policies, services, products and advice.

DDS's purpose is to protect the NZDF from security threats, vulnerabilities and risks that could cause harm to our people, information and capabilities.

Defence Security comprises of Counter Intelligence, Security Delivery, Security Strategy, Policy and Risk, Security Guard Force and Chief of Staff functions.

Collectively, these functions work across multiple facets of the NZDF to shape, develop and implement security capability that protects what is important to the Defence Force.

Every hour of every day, 365 days of the year, the New Zealand Defence Force is contributing to the defence, security and well-being of Aotearoa / New Zealand.

The minimum citizenship and residency criteria for security clearances to be granted by the NZ Defence Force are as follows:

Higher level Security Clearance
- most preferably a NZ citizen who has resided continuously in this country for the last 10 years, OR
- is a citizen of, and/or has resided continuously in one or more of the following countries for the last 10 years: either Australia, Canada, NZ, UK or the USA; and has a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed as appropriate by the NZSIS towards a recommendation of suitability for a security clearance at a higher level.
