The Manager Personnel Security is responsible for leading a multi-disciplinary team to screen and assess personnel, contractors and suppliers to determine their suitability to have access to classified material and to hold a National Security Clearance.

They are also responsible for managing specialist security investigations to assess the level of security risk posed to security, identify mitigations and develop management plans.

In this role, you will manage the delivery of a range of complex investigative, advisory, and assessment services to support the protection of NZDF personnel and capabilities from harm.

You will lead a motivated and high performing team of six direct reports consisting of:

  • Personnel Security Advisors who undertake security investigations and personnel security assessments to ensure compliance with the Protective Security Requirements (PSR) and NZDF Security Policy; and
  • Clinical Psychologists who provide specialist advice, assessment, and management of security clearance holders in relation to mental health risk factors.


You will also provide support to the Directorate of Defence Security (DDS) Senior Leadership Team and contribute to strategic development, business improvement, change management, risk management, policy development, talent management and engagement for DDS.

It is preferred that this role is based in Wellington. However, consideration will be given for strong applicants to work remotely from other locations within NZ.

This role requires regular domestic travel as you will be managing a team based at different NZDF Camps/Bases throughout NZ.

Occasional international travel may be required to attend conferences or professional development opportunities.

We are looking for an experienced and capable leader who can develop their people.

You will be able to set a clear direction, engage with your team, and effectively manage and oversee their workload.

You will have experience in managing the delivery of investigative, advisory, or assessment services.

You will have:

  • Excellent relationship management, interpersonal, communication and leadership skills;
  • Sound knowledge of investigative best practice with experience in the management of investigations;
  • The ability to critically analyse complex information and make effective recommendations to senior leadership;
  • Experience in managing teams and functions that deliver complex products and services across a number of geographic locations; and
  • A relevant tertiary level qualification or equivalent professional experience.
A full New Zealand Class 1 Driver's License is required.

The Directorate of Defence Security (DDS) provides a range of protective security policies, services, products and advice.

DDS's purpose is to protect the NZDF from security threats, vulnerabilities and risks that could cause harm to our people, information and capabilities.

Defence Security comprises of Counter Intelligence, Security Delivery, Security Strategy, Policy and Risk, Security Guard Force and Chief of Staff functions.

Collectively, these functions work across multiple facets of the NZDF to shape, develop and implement security capability that protects what is important to the Defence Force.

This role sits within Security Delivery and manages the Personnel Security function.
