Kōrero mō te Tūranga - About the Role

The Readiness Science Products team plays a key role in MPI's wider readiness function.

The mission is to ensure MPI has the people, resources, processes, and systems to manage all threats to the biosecurity and primary production systems.

You will bring your confidence and relationship management strengths which will allow you to work with senior stakeholders both within and external to MPI.

As the managerial go to person, you will lead and manage a team of technical professionals who are responsible for developing, leading and managing science-based readiness products (both sector specific and threat specific) to support the delivery of responses in the biosecurity system.


In this role you'll:

  • Oversee the development of sciencebased readiness products including (but not limited to) response operational specifications, vaccination plans, threat specific readiness plans, incursion control and management tools.
  • Provide leadership and management to all staff within the function by ensuring robust processes for communication, engagement, learning and development and performance management are implemented.
  • Manage all resources and outcomes within the function through the effective implementation of organisational processes and procedures (e.g., health and safety, recruitment, financial, planning, monitoring, and measuring, reporting).
  • Work collaboratively across the leadership team facilitating and supporting change initiatives and increasing capability across the group (and wider directorate) to ensure that agreed objectives are met.

  • Proven people leadership, management, development, performance management, succession planning and building a team.
  • Have a graduate qualification in a relevant discipline
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills and the ability to influence
  • Experience in managing internal and external relationships with an assortment of stakeholders, with demonstrated management success in building relationships, gaining the support and participation of key individuals and groups, and working through influence rather than positional power.
  • Sound knowledge of the biosecurity system and how Government works
  • Proven ability to lead and manage a team in ambiguous work environments
Mō tō mātou Rōpū - About the Team

Biosecurity New Zealand has a critical role in preventing harmful organisms crossing New Zealand's borders.

Along with preparing for and responding to biosecurity incursions, it also manages border and compliance activities, diagnostics and surveillance activities and MPI's centralised intelligence, planning and co-ordination group.
