The Strategic Advisor provides strategic advice and assistance to the Chief of Staff, Chief of Defence Force and the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) senior leadership team on strategic matters.

You'll be ready and able to respond to the issues of the day, assessing the options at hand and providing recommendations on the best course of action.

You'll be trusted to provide accurate and strategic advice to the Office of the Chief of the Defence Force and the Office of the Minister of Defence.

The Strategic Advisor works in collaboration with Strategic Commitments and Engagement (SCE) Branch and other portfolios as appropriate on the production of military strategic and geo-political advice and messaging in support of both NZDF and Ministerial decision making.

You will have a thorough understanding of the geo-political context of current issues and be able to navigate political sensitivities and foreign affairs implications, negotiating the military and political interface.

The Strategic Advisor works closely with Chief of Staff, Chief of Defence Force and the Chief Advisor Public Affairs to achieve organisational goals and objectives by overseeing and coordinating initiatives consistent with the strategic plan, and Chief of Defence Force's intent and direction.

You will support Defence Public Affairs in responding to media enquiries.

You will have the ability to think strategically while bringing together a range of varied policy perspectives, evidence based research and operational considerations.

You will be a confident and clear communicator with excellent relationship management skills and the ability to influence. You will have well developed analysis and critical thinking skills with experience providing advice to senior leaders.

You will also be:

  • Highly capable of providing accurate and strategic advice;
  • Able to tailor your briefings to the audience; providing short and sharp briefings to senior officials that cover the key points;
  • Knowledgeable in the workings of government with experience working with senior management teams and/or Ministers offices; and
  • Tertiary qualified or have the equivalent experience, in politics, international relations, public relations, communications or a related discipline.

The purpose of the Office of the Chief of Defence Force (OCDF) is to ensure that the Defence Force is working effectively across Headquarters (NZDF) HQNZDF Command and Executive functions along both Service (Army, Navy, Air Force) and Portfolio lines.

The OCDF provides direct advice and support to the Chief of Defence Force (CDF) and the Vice Chief of Defence Force (VCDF) that enables timely and effective decision making.

The OCDF provides further support, advice, direction and coordination across the wider organisation through HQNZDF Service and Portfolio branches.

Every hour of every day, 365 days of the year, the New Zealand Defence Force is contributing to the defence, security and well-being of Aotearoa / New Zealand.

- is a citizen of, and/or has resided continuously in one or more of the following countries for the last 10 years: either Australia, Canada, NZ, UK or the USA; and has a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed as appropriate by the NZSIS towards a recommendation of suitability for a security clearance at a higher level.
