The Chief Ombudsman works with his staff to help New Zealanders in their dealings with government agencies. The focus is on handling complaints against government agencies, undertaking investigations and inspections, and encouraging good administration. The Chief Ombudsman is independent and impartial, and seeks to ensure fairness for all.

The Strategic Advice Team supports the Chief Ombudsman by providing high level policy and practice advice that influences work across all of the Ombudsman's teams.

Mō te tūranga - about the role
The role of the Advisor is to provide strategic advice on matters relating to policy and practice. In addition, the Advisor will contribute their strategic expertise and advice to support the work of other teams.
He kōrero mōu - about you

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • A relevant tertiary qualification, preferably in public and administrative law.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the role of the Ombudsmen in contemporary society and the Office's strategic priorities.
  • Good understanding and experience of the Ombudsmen's jurisdiction, operating legislation, and investigation practice.
  • Good understanding of current New Zealand public sector practice, the context in which public sector agencies operate, and the challenges they face.
  • Experience in providing strategic, specialist advice.
  • Proven research, analytical and problem solving abilities.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to express complex and/or controversial ideas clearly, using language and terminology suitably adjusted to the needs of the audience.
  • A proven ability to establish and maintain good stakeholder relationships.
  • A proven ability to consistently complete assigned tasks on time and to a high standard.

Depending on skills and experience, the salary is expected to be between $85,134 to $111,738 with $106,418 being the mid-point.
