As New Zealand's only transmission company, Transpower's role as a State-Owned Enterprise is to build, operate, and maintain the National Grid.

At the heart of the electricity sector, we have a unique and critical role helping to enable and accelerate a net carbon zero future.


Transpower calculates annual transmission charges each year in accordance with the Transmission Pricing Methodology (TPM), which is a schedule of the Electricity Industry Participation Code and is governed by the Electricity Authority.

Because we are a natural monopoly, our investments in grid assets and allowable revenue are regulated by the Commerce Commission.


About the team


As the demand for electricity continues to grow to meet climate change and sustainability goals, so too does the demand for the critical infrastructure and Transmission services to enable this change.


The Pricing team is a small, supportive group who operate and administer the grid pricing function that calculates how Transpower's costs as owner and operator of the Grid are recovered from our direct customers (~$1B pa).

The team must equally consider the interests of all our customers. This places a heavy reliance on consistency and precedent (as opposed to unregulated pricing that is much more flexible).

The team is an internal gatekeeper for ensuring Transpower is kept whole (as a cost recovery business), and pricing outcomes are consistent with regulation.


The team ultimately supports Transpower to be a successful and commercially orientated business that works for the long-term interests of New Zealand.


The opportunity - we are growing


Based in our Waikoukou Head Office, you'll learn to use the pricing models that determine how revenue is recovered from customers who connect to the National Grid.

Over time, you'll help customers understand the pricing implications of new connections to the grid.

You'll have great on the job training and support to be able to provide evidence-based recommendations to the Pricing Manager and:

  • Support the team to prepare annual transmission charges to a high standard.
  • Collate, analyse, and interpret data to show who, why, and what it means. When you analyse data, you'll seek to be ahead of potential questions about both the data, and importantly you will have a view on the meaning behind the data for both Transpower and our customers.
  • Operate commercial investment models or calculations for internal consumption that are easy to follow.

You'll have a minimum of two years' work experience and be known for your organisational skills, passion for numbers, and attention to detail, coupled with the ability to learn quickly Collaborative, you enjoy working in a team, and are a calm, positive problem solver who is willing to ask questions and seek to understand.


Your work to date, CV and cover letter will demonstrate:

  • Numerical analytical skills and a good understanding of the importance of accurate pricing
  • Ability to use excel at intermediate/advanced level, including pivot tables
  • Confident, clear written and verbal communication
  • Ideally you will have analysed commercially important data, and been able to derive insights and produce recommendations, being cognisant of detailed rules/requirements
  • A degree qualification that has strengthened your use of numerical analysis
