The Senior Advisor Communications and Education (Media) is responsible for helping plan, manage, and monitor the Electoral Commission's media presence for the 2023 General Election.

This includes engaging with media proactively and reactively, working with national and regional employees on responses to media enquiries, and proactive story development.

This is a fixed term role, until December 2023.
What you will need to succeed | Ko ngā mea ka hiahiatia e koe kia angitū:

  • Extensive experience in proactive and reactive media liaison including management of major issues and events and an ability to manage complex and/or confidential media matters
  • Ability to develop, implement and monitor media strategies and tactics to increase media coverage
  • Ability to support Commission spokespeople with preparation for media interviews
  • Knowledge of the New Zealand media and an understanding of journalists' needs
  • Experience engaging with a variety of stakeholders both internally and externally, including Māori, Pacific Peoples, people from other ethnic backgrounds, young people, and people with disabilities
  • Experience using a variety of communications channels to communicate concepts
  • Experience in social and online media
  • Experience in using education and communications strategies to reach large audiences
  • Experience developing resources and content that meet particular business requirements while at the same time being targeted to the given audience.
  • Experience working in the public sector and an understanding of public sector standards

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supporting the implementation of the communications and public information programmes for electoral events, including promoting participation, enrolment, and voting
  • Supporting the Commission's strategic communications and education plans through:
  • development and delivery of proactive media resourcesincluding media releases
- relationship management with media stakeholders and influencers

  • Supporting organisational communications including internal communications
  • Supporting the Commission's online presence including website content communications.
About You

Our ideal applicants will have:

  • A relevant tertiary qualification and/or equivalent experience in:
  • journalism
- corporate or public sector media management

  • Proven ability to write effectively for internal and external audiences
  • High level of computer literacy
  • Experience in public sector communications roles.
