Senior Policy Analyst - Disability Policy Team

We are seeking a motivated and inquiring Senior Policy Analyst to join the Disability Policy team at the Ministry of Social Development (MSD).

We are looking for committed and capable person to join us. We will provide you with a range of diverse experiences from short to long-term work. You will work both across MSD and with a range of agencies and stakeholders.

About the team
Disability Policy Team
The Disability Policy team provides strategic policy advice to enable disabled people to live good lives. It is responsible for a broad range of policy issues impacting disabled people and whānau, collaborates closely with the Whaikaha
  • Ministry of Disabled People
and the Office for Disability Issues, and provides advice to both the Minister for Disability Issues and the Minister for Social Development and Employment. The team is part of the International, Disability, and Multigenerational Group within MSD's Policy Branch.
The team is currently leading work on accessibility and have introduced legislation to the House.

Alongside this, we are responsible for policy work on the Carers Strategy and Mahi Aroha - the Carers Action Plan and amending the New Zealand Sign Language Act.

We also provide policy advice on Community Participation, provide an Enabling Good Lives and disability lens across MSD as well as contributing to work across government to support consideration of disabled people and their whānau in policy advice.


Recent examples of the work we do includes:

  • advice relating to how government should organise and structure itself to achieve disability system transformation, leading to the decision to establish Whaikaha
  • Ministry of Disabled People
- policy work to develop and introduce accessibility legislation, and
- advice on how a wage supplement could be implemented to ensure that those on Minimum Wage Exemption permits receive the minimum wage

You will be part of a wider supportive policy branch
The Social Impact Policy Team is part of a busy, diverse and friendly Policy Branch.

Skills and experience
We are keen to hear from a motivated and experienced Policy Analyst or Senior Policy Analyst.

The core parts of the role will include:

  • Providing or contributing to advice on complex issues, with mínimal support
  • Building relationships and leading engagement with stakeholders, both internally and outside of the Ministry
  • Helping to build the capability of people in the team, including supporting junior staff on their projects
