Policy Analyst & Senior Policy Analyst - Social Impact

We are seeking a motivated and inquiring Policy Analyst or Senior Policy Analyst to join our Social Impact Policy Team at the Ministry of Social Development (MSD).

We are looking for committed and capable person to join us. We will provide you with a range of diverse experiences from short to long-term work. You will work both across MSD and with a range of agencies and stakeholders.

The opportunity is in our dynamic Social Impact Policy Team

Social development is not primarily about being the 'ambulance at the bottom of the cliff', but is about supporting long-term change that strengthens wellbeing and enhances the mana of all New Zealanders.

The Social Impact Policy team provides meaningful policy advice to Government Ministers on a range of priority social policy issues including:

Social Cohesion - Te Korowai Whetū Social Cohesion responds to several recommendations by the Royal Commission of Inquiry into the terrorist attacks on the Christchurch Masjidain on 15 March 2019.

Social cohesion is essential in ensuring that people are connected and belong, are able to participate meaningfully in society, and in preventing the development of harmful radicalising ideologies.

Family Violence and Sexual Violence - MSD supports the strategic objectives of Te Aorerekura, the National Strategy to Eliminate Family Violence and Sexual Violence and its action plan.

MSD is leading five actions in the action plan and supports a further 19 actions. Key cohorts supported by MSD-led actions include Māori, Pacific, and Ethnic Communities.

Social services sector - MSD provides police advice to Ministers on ensuring the quality and safety of the diverse range of critical social services provided across Aotearoa New Zealand, including Social Workers, NGO organisations and other community providers and partners.

MSD is also responsible for stewarding the legislation related to Social Worker registration.

We work closely with a range of stakeholders including our Māori, Communities and Partnerships team within MSD and other government departments including the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet, Ministry of Ethnic Communities, Oranga Tamariki, Te Puna Aonui and many others.

We also have close relationships with a range of community partners and stakeholders.

Skills and experienceWe are keen to hear from a motivated and experienced Policy Analyst or Senior Policy Analyst.

For a Policy Analyst, the core parts of the role will include:

  • Providing or contributing to advice that is clear, well-reasoned and politically neutral
  • Bringing together evidence to draw conclusions (eg on key issues and their root causes)
  • Engaging with stakeholders and the community
  • Working collaboratively on projects both within MSD and across agencies

For a Senior Analyst, this will include:

  • Providing or contributing to advice on complex issues, with mínimal support
  • Building relationships and leading engagement with stakeholders, both internally and outside of the Ministry
- helping to build the capability of people in the team, including supporting junior staff on their projects
