At Manatū Hauora - Ministry of Health we are the kaitiaki of the health system, providing leadership and driving strategy and performance.

We regulate the health sector and are the primary source of advice on health matters.

As we move away from the response to the Covid pandemic now is the time to look to the future, to ensure New Zealanders and especially our most vulnerable communities are cared for by a health system that is innovative, equitable, future focussed and world leading.

The Strategy and Policy team supports Te Pou Hauora Māori | The Māori Health Directorate to be the principal policy advisor to government for Māori health matters.

Te Pou Hauora Māori leads the Ministry's kaitiaki | stewardship role to ensure the Ministry is meeting its obligations to Māori under Te Tiriti o Waitangi and Māori health equity in the context of the health system's performance for Māori.

Ko tōu ake mahi | What You'll Do

Your leadership experience will help you to successfully lead and manage the Strategy and Policy Team, its programmes, projects and work areas, ensuring all work is done to a high standard.

Lead a policy team to deliver high quality advice in Māori health and wellbeing
Lead the team's work collaboratively, taking strategic and tactical approaches to achieve results
Lead the development, planning and implementation of specific strategies, including the delivery and monitoring of the Hauora Strategy, Whakamaua: Māori Health Action Plan and key projects
Lead and support the pastoral and development needs of the team, ensuring it has a positive culture to address equity for Māori in health policy development and the capacity and capability to contribute to the Group and Directorate's work programmes and priorities for Hauora Māori
Build collaborative and positive relationships across the team, group, directorate, Ministry, the wider health sector, government and other external stakeholders including with the Māori health sector

Commitment to systemic and strategic change that leads to a more equitable health and disability system for Māori that honours Te Tiriti o Waitangi
Experience working across the public sector in policy leadership roles
Previous experience leading people into change
Experience building and maintaining effective relationships that lead to productive outcomes and results
Ability to operate in te ao Māori contexts, including understanding of tikanga, kawa and te reo Māori
