Tēnei tūranga - About the Role:

As the National Manager Petroleum & Minerals you will be responsible for providing strategic advice and intervention, operational regulation and monitoring, and external sector leadership to ensure that New Zealand's oil, gas, mineral and coal resources are effectively managed in a way that enhances New Zealand's prosperity and supports our way of life.


This role is responsible for leading national regulatory focused teams to manage New Zealand's petroleum and mineral assets to generate the greatest possible value for New Zealand and manage risks to the Crown of this development and decommissioning.


You will provide direction across regulatory teams, as well as thought leadership across the Energy and Resource Markets branch to support New Zealand's energy transition.

  • An advanced tertiary qualification in a relevant discipline and experience in a senior public or private sector role in the natural resources sector
  • Extensive experience leading the development and delivery of regulatory operations at a senior level
  • Solid understanding about the policy and legislation elements of the regulatory systems, including how to influence and create impact where needed
  • Deep understanding of the elements that motivate a regulated sector using a systems approach and identifying levers and behavioural drivers available to the function to influence that sector
  • Proven leadership skills including demonstrated ability to engage and motivate staff and an ability to build strong high performing managers and teams in a complex organisation
  • Ability to quickly establish and build strong working relationships and to develop and maintain effective relationships with Ministers, senior public service officials, iwi, internal and external stakeholders
  • Demonstrated ability to manoeuvre through complex political situations effectively and efficiently and to keep inquiring and learning under extreme pressure or in situations with high ambiguity
