Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role


New Zealand has an ongoing commitment to support developing countries and our Pacific partners in their response to climate change and to address increasing environmental challenges and biodiversity loss.


This position will focus on the multi-faceted area of climate change policy and provide technical climate change support to sector and bilateral teams within the Pacific and Development Group at MFAT.


In this policy focused role you will:

  • Work across Government and interested parties in Aotearoa New Zealand and partner countries to contribute to major aspects of our climate change work.
  • Provide advisory and analytical functions across a range of climate changerelated topics of relevance to MFAT's Pacific and Development Group;
  • Provide leadership and advice on (and at times manage) a highimpact and coherent programme of aid investments that cover climate change issues, particularly focusing on the Pacific region, but with exposure to other geographical areas;
  • Influence decisions and discussions using your expertise and credibility as a climate change expert;
  • Engage with climate change experts from academia and thought leadership to continually improve our advisory capability.


You will be helping to ensure that delivering climate outcomes is core to what we do across the Pacific and development programme and the work of MFAT more broadly.

Your work will be international, but still with a strong Pacific context, and you will be expected to travel periodically.

We'd like to hear from you if you are an experienced Adviser with the following experience:

  • A minimum of three-five years strategic public service policy experience, ideally working on climate change and/or environment related issues
  • Experience working in an international context and a sound understanding of development and climate change issues and practice
  • Proven experience developing strategies and initiatives that are well founded, technically sound, practical and appropriate.


Ideally you will also have a good understanding of tikanga (Māori customs and protocols), with the ability to weave te ao Māori (the Māori worldview) into your work.

If you are just starting on this journey that's OK too - as long as you have a willingness to learn and a desire to develop your cultural capability.
