Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role

This role sits within the Industry and Innovation Unit within the Development Economy and Prosperity Division.

The division is a key part of the Pacific and Development Group of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

We are increasingly looking to identify and explore opportunities to achieve development impact through innovation, private sector engagement and impact finance.

The key purpose of this role is to provide technical advice, influence the Ministry's strategy and programming through sector insights, and develop policy advice for agriculture, in a way that protects and advances food security, livelihoods and environmental sustainability.

Senior Advisers are also expected to lead complex initiatives in their area of expertise through project and programme design, management and evaluation.


Key accountabilities will include:

  • Providing strategic insights and advice to support MFAT's international development partnerships across agriculture programmes
  • Lead the development of new project concepts and designs, including business case development.
  • Provide advice to regional/country programme teams developing regional/country strategies and four year plans about opportunities for agriculture investment in that particular region/country in the context of climate change.
  • Work with other MFAT Divisions to identify and source the external technical expertise that PDG needs to deliver its work successfully.
  • Contributing to the division's delivery of planned and agreed projects to realise strategic priorities and high level outcomes.


The appointment range for this role is $117,541 to $138,283 total remuneration including employer contribution to kiwisaver - negotiable depending on experience.

We are looking for someone with experience working on international development policy/projects/programmes that aim to support the resilient food systems and inclusive agricultural markets for sustainable agriculture in the Pacific, ASEAN, Africa and Latin America and Caribbean regions.

Applicants need not have tertiary qualifications in agriculture, but should be able to demonstrate a solid understanding and experience of climate change and agricultural development in a developing country context.

Skills and experience across innovation, private sector engagement and/or impact finance would also be beneficial.
