Principal Adviser - Engagement and Negotiations (Climate, Antarctica and Environment)

  • Exciting new role in the leadership team responsible for representing New Zealand internationally on Climate Change, Antarctic and Environmental issues

Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role


This role provides strategic policy leadership and expertise across the Climate, Antarctica and Environment portfolios as well as negotiating and collaborating on behalf of the New Zealand Government.


  • Lead strategy and policy development on select Climate, Antarctica and Environment issues as a key member of the Division's leadership team
  • Shape a new role, identifying areas of the Division's work where you can lead New Zealand's negotiating efforts
  • Lead the Division's Māori and stakeholder engagement planning

The appointment salary range for this role is $162,706 and $191,419 total remuneration, inclusive of our 3% KiwiSaver employer contribution.

We'd like to hear from you if you are an experienced negotiator and leader with the following skills and experience:

  • Expertise in complex negotiating environments, including leadership in multilateral settings
  • Leading development of complex, high profile foreign policy advice
  • Strong project management, planning and organising skills to manage a large work programme
  • Experience leading engagement with Māori and with foreign policy stakeholders (business, NGOs, academia)
  • Ability to build, maintain and leverage relationships internally and externally


Ideally you will also have a good understanding of tikanga (Māori customs and protocols), with the ability to weave te ao Māori (the Māori worldview) into your work.


If you are just starting on this journey that's OK too - as long as you have a willingness to learn and a desire to develop your cultural capability.
