This position offers you the chance to contribute to the development of innovative, customer-focused strategic transport plans that will guide the city's growth and connectivity for years to come.

This role is perfect for someone who thrives on collaboration, values evidence-based decision making, and is passionate about delivering real outcomes for communities. You will be joining a supportive team environment where your expertise will be valued and your input will directly influence key decisions at both local and regional levels. Flexible working opportunities are available, ensuring you can balance your professional ambitions with personal commitments while enjoying ongoing training and development.

  • Play a central part in developing integrated, forward-thinking transport strategies that shape Auckland's future mobility and urban landscape, working alongside knowledgeable professionals who share your commitment to public value.
  • Enjoy flexible working arrangements and generous remuneration, allowing you to achieve an excellent work-life balance while advancing your career in a supportive and inclusive environment.
  • Be recognised as a trusted advisor by senior leaders and stakeholders across multiple agencies, contributing your insights to high-profile projects that make a tangible difference to the community.

What you'll do:

As a Senior Transport Planner, you will immerse yourself in the creation of strategic documents that set the direction for Auckland's evolving transport system. Your day-to-day activities will involve collaborating closely with colleagues from various disciplines as well as engaging with external partners such as government agencies and consultants.

  • Produce high-quality content for strategic network plans, policies, and bylaws that align with broader policy direction and support integrated transport solutions.
  • Lead or co-ordinate the development of specific planning initiatives, ensuring all outputs are collaborative, deliverable, and underpinned by robust evidence.
  • Engage proactively with internal teams and external partners-including council bodies, government agencies, and consultants-to build consensus around shared transport objectives.
  • Provide impartial advice on trade-offs between competing priorities within multi-modal transport planning frameworks, always considering best practice and latest data.
  • Support the leadership team by modelling responsiveness, critical thinking, and effective use of evidence in all aspects of planning work.
  • Raise the profile of the Integrated Network Planning team through active participation in external forums and by representing transport plans effectively to diverse audiences.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders across the public sector, ensuring their perspectives are reflected in strategy documents.
  • Respond promptly to stakeholder enquiries with well-considered advice that supports informed decision-making at all organisational levels.
  • Ensure all written advice-particularly for senior decision makers-is clear, well-presented, timely, and aligned with strategic outcomes.
  • Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement by sharing knowledge of best practice approaches and supporting colleagues' professional growth.

What you bring:

To excel as a Senior Transport Planner in this influential role, you will bring extensive experience gained from working on significant transport or urban planning projects-ideally within large-scale or public sector settings.

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within multi-agency environments to advance shared objectives during complex planning processes.
  • Comprehensive understanding of transport planning principles, funding mechanisms, urban planning policies, local government operations, and relevant legislative frameworks.
  • Proven strategic thinking skills including application of intervention logic to new initiatives and development of frameworks for evaluating competing priorities.
  • Exceptional analytical abilities combined with strong numeracy skills; adept at synthesising large volumes of data into clear recommendations for action.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills tailored to inform senior decision makers across diverse audiences.
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills enabling you to foster trust-based relationships with colleagues, partners, and stakeholders alike.
  • Minimum five years' experience in transport planning roles within large or complex organisations; public sector experience is highly desirable.
  • Experience using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) tools is preferred but not essential; willingness to learn new technologies is valued.
  • Bachelor's degree in urban planning or related field required; postgraduate qualifications are advantageous.
