Sustainability Assistant

We're looking for a motivated student to join
Trevelyan's over summer and help explore new ways to create value from reject
kiwifruit. This hands-on, research-focused role will suit someone who's
passionate about food science, sustainability, and innovation in the
horticulture industry.
Mō Tēnei Tūranga Mahi | About the Role
This is a fixed-term opportunity working on a project investigating
opportunities to produce kiwifruit juice from reject fruit, supporting
Trevelyan's commitment to reducing waste and driving sustainability. You'll get
the chance to apply your technical knowledge in a real-world setting and
contribute to research that has genuine industry impact.
Your mahi will include:
- Reviewing
current outlets for reject fruit in the NZ kiwifruit industry and analysing
their costs and benefits - Identifying
potential opportunities for value-added kiwifruit products - Preparing
for and managing the production, bottling, and sterilisation of kiwifruit juice
using existing equipment - Researching
ways to retain nutrient value and extend shelf life through different
sterilisation methods - Investigating
market opportunities for kiwifruit juice products, both in NZ and overseas - Contributing
to a financial feasibility analysis for larger-scale production - Supporting
other sustainability initiatives within Trevelyan's
He kōrero mōu | About you
You'll bring:
- Current
enrolment in a Science, Engineering, Technology Design, Business, or related
degree (ideally in your third year) - Preferred
study area in Food Science or Technology, Chemical Engineering, Horticulture,
or Environmental Science - Previous
experience in the kiwifruit or horticulture sector, or in food technology would
be advantageous - A
curious and practical mindset with a passion for problem-solving - Strong
communication and interpersonal skills - Ability
to work independently and collaboratively - A full
Class 1 Drivers Licence - Availability
to work mid-November 2025 to February 2026 - Access
to accommodation in the Bay of Plenty and ability to commute daily to our No. 1
Road Te Puke site - Eligibility
under the Callaghan R&D Experience Grant requirements
