Ko wai tātou | Who we areThe Health and Disability Commissioner (HDC) is tasked with independently promoting and protecting the rights of people using health and disability services in Aotearoa New Zealand.
HDC also facilitate the fair and efficient resolution of complaints relating to those rights, one of the ways they do this is through the provision of independent advocacy services. These services are available to consumers, to support them express, navigate and resolve their concerns with health and disability providers.
Mō tēnei tūranga mahi | About the role
The Director of Advocacy is part of the Executive Leadership Team (ELT) at HDC; as well as championing and embedding advocacy as a mode of resolution into organisational strategic development and implementation, you will:
- Lead the development and implementation of advocacy service strategies and work plans.
- Manage the contract relationships, negotiation, monitoring and reporting requirements for the provision of the independent advocacy service.
- Lead the public promotion of advocacy services, with a focus on equitable access for all New Zealanders.
- Build strong relationships with and deliver education to key providers and consumers across the health and disability sector.
- Contribute to the organisational leadership, performance and success as part of the ELT.

As well as an absolute passion for consumer advocacy and restorative processes, to be successful in this role you will need to bring with you:
- A working understanding of the purpose of the HDC and the Code of Health and Disability Services Consumers' Rights.
- Strong engagement and communication capability with proven experience and success in building productive and trusting relationships with diverse populations.
- Experience negotiating, managing, monitoring and reporting on the delivery of contracts of significant value.
- Evidence of a commitment to upholding Te Tiriti o Waitangi through leadership and strategic development.
- An ability to articulate an in depth understanding of and how to embed health equity into strategy development and implementation.
