Environmental Monitoring Scientist

**Mō te tūranga | About the role**
- Based in Hamilton, but our sites cover the whole of the Waikato region from the Coromandel on the east coast, to Raglan on the west coast.
- Along with physically demanding fieldwork, our data needs to be processed and quality checked. IT literacy is a must, along with an aptitude for the environment and science. You will need to process and analyse data to support State of the Environment (SOE) monitoring.
- The role involves:

- Planning, organising and undertaking coastal surveys collecting samples, deploying instruments and carrying out surveys.
- Collecting, Processing, and quality checking coastal samples and data - including data input into databases.
- Maintain, calibrate and operate instrumentation (e.g. SONDEs).
- Identification of macroinvertebrate samples.
- Supervise students over summer.
- Driving to remote parts of the region to collect samples and data.
- Working long days (including nights away from home).
- Operating small research vessels.
- A strong focus on working safely looking after yourself and those around you and adhering to council Health & Safety policies.
- Health and safety is at the forefront of everything we do at WRC, whether working on your own, or as part of a team. You will utilise your field knowledge to collect data safely and offer suggestions to improve the safety and efficiency of our sites.

**Mō ngā pūkenga | Qualifications and experience**
- A degree in natural, physical, environmental sciences or a related field.
- Minimum 2 years’ experience.
- Previous experience undertaking coastal or marine field work is desirable.
- Full drivers licence and comfortable driving utes, as the role will include towing and launching boats.
- Must be a capable swimmer (competency testing will be undertaken).
- Excellent communication skills - written and verbal.

- The position is in the Ecology Team, in the Environmental Monitoring (EM) Section of the Science, Policy and Information Directorate at WRC.
- The team measures, analyses, and reports on the health of coasts, terrestrial areas, rivers, lakes, streams and geothermal areas across the Waikato region.
- The wider EM section is the centre of excellence for Council’s environmental monitoring, including Hydrology, Water Quality, Ecology and Environmental Data management.
- The information we collect is used by WRC scientists, policy makers, and the government to manage the community’s and the environments’ wellbeing.
