Senior Environmental Monitoring Scientist

This role would suit an experienced monitoring scientist looking for an opportunity to step up. This is a 15-month fixed term to cover for parental leave until early January 2026. This is a role in the Water Quality Monitoring team who: measure, analyse, and report on the health of rivers, lakes, and groundwater to meet council’s responsibilities under s35 of the RMA.
The Waikato Regional Council has 164 long-term surface water quality and hundreds of groundwater monitoring sites. Come and be part of this innovative team and add to the legacy of this 40-year dataset.
**Mō te tūranga | About the role**
- mentoring and developing a team of monitoring scientists
- leading and overseeing all aspects of water quality monitoring from data collection (lots of time in the field) to data processing and reporting
- overseeing the contracting deliverables and liaising with laboratories
- overseeing data management and quality assurance of water quality information
- provision of information and advice to internal and external customers
- project management for process improvements
This role also oversees summer contractors, and includes updating and maintaining monitoring manuals and quality assurance methods and protocols. A lot of your time will be spent travelling around the Waikato region and working in the field.
**Mō ngā pūkenga | Qualifications and experience**
- Full Drivers Licence, ability to drive manual
- Degree in natural, physical, or environmental sciences
- Ideally 5 years' relevant experience
- Physically fit, able to work full days in the field.
