Hamilton, New Zealand Waikato Regional Council Full time

**About us**:
We want more good people to come and do great things with us.

We love where we live. That’s why we work so hard to look after our region and the people who live and work in the Waikato region.

Customers sit at the heart of everything we do, and all staff have an important role to play in the delivery of exceptional customer service.

Our work is as diverse as the region we care for; from the tip of the Coromandel Peninsula to the slopes of Ruapehu. We’ve got ambitious goals and there are some tricky issues, but that’s what makes it so interesting.

Looking for flexible ways of working options, at Waikato Regional Council we are committed to working more creatively to ‘get work done’ in a way that is of mutual benefit to you, the organisation, and our communities.

**About you**:

- We’re looking for a senior scientist to help inform management of stream ecosystems or water quality in the Waikato region. The challenge of water management places a high expectation on a scientist to draw on complex information to deliver expert advice to council.

**Qualifications**:

- A postgraduate degree in biological sciences, chemistry or related fields
- Understanding of complex ecosystem or water quality processes

**Experience**:

- 10 years in a relevant science role
- Experience interpreting complex information for non-specialized audiences
- Experience monitoring stream ecosystems, including freshwater fish, or river water quality

**About the role**:
The position will be a permanent, full-time position, based out of our Hamilton office.

**The role description includes**:

- Strengthening internal and external relationships with peers through advising, facilitating, and communicating where the issues may be complex and unclear.
- Providing robust technical advice in challenging situations.
- Development and refinement of environmental indicators and environmental monitoring.
- Problem-solving requiring skills in analysing, initiating, creating, developing and resolving.
- Capability to strategically analyse existing monitoring programmes and techniques and to adjust and enhance both the monitoring and research programmes in-line with Waikato Regional Council’s science information needs.
- Working collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders to negotiate challenging issues and work towards solutions which enhance environmental outcomes

**The programme of work includes**:

- Provide technical advice to both internal and external customers by undertaking and utilising research investigations, monitoring, and writing reports.
- Develop, implement, review, and report on environmental performance indicators.
- Identify scientific information needs and develop strategies and solutions to obtain information relevant to Council’s needs.
