Department Of Corrections NZ is seeking a dynamic individual to join our Organisational, Resilience and Safety Team as a Principal Adviser Custodial Practice.

About the Role

We are looking for a pro-active and experienced Principal Adviser in custodial practice to provide strategic advice and direction. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and providing advice and support to operational and practice leadership teams to ensure that practice development and application of practice in the field is effective, consistent, and continuously improving.

  • Leads the development of interventions and solutions to ensure professional, effective, and efficient practice delivery.
  • Provides advice on practice initiatives and improvements identified through local and/or international best practices.
  • Identifies and advises on risks related to practice and offender management, ensuring risk is well managed and appropriate documentation is maintained.

The role requires close and effective relationships with operational leaders, practice leaders, and practitioners to improve services. You will model work professionally and collaboratively with technical experts and practitioners to share practice developments and issues.

This is a fixed-term position until 31 October 2025 based in Wellington at our National Office, however location can be flexible across Aotearoa with flexible work opportunities.

  • Professional credibility and demonstrated commitment to working within ethical and legal boundaries.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence and lead practice.
  • Ability to build and maintain rapport with others based on their own integrity and honesty, demonstrating effective interpersonal skills.

A recent experience in a custodial operating setting and relevant work experience with an undergraduate tertiary qualification in Criminology or Psychology would be desirable.

The midpoint salary range for this role is $137,525 with a full range of $116,897 - $165,030. Appointment and remuneration will reflect your skills and experience relevant to the role.
