Consultant Psychiatrist - Ward 9C at Te Whatu Ora - Health New Zealand Southern, Otago
  • 0.5 FTE

Health New Zealand - Te Whatu Ora is firmly grounded in the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and is dedicated to serving all New Zealanders. Through integration and collaboration, we're building a health system underpinned by partnership, equity, sustainability, whānau-centred care, and excellence.

About the role

We are recruiting for a Consultant Psychiatrist to be based at Ward 9C, Wakari Hospital. Ward 9C is a busy open 16 bed inpatient facility comprising 2 acute youth beds and 14 acute adult beds with dedicated staff providing 24 hour care. The service caters to clients who require a period of increased assessment, investigations and/or interventions that cannot be safely provided for in the community. Admissions come via Community Mental Health teams or the Emergency Psychiatric Service, covering all major psychiatric diagnoses.

Our 16 bed open plan Acute Inpatient ward provides care for the full range of general adult mental health disorders, including youth, mothers and babies, and eating disorders. You will work alongside experienced clinical staff and become an integral part of the multidisciplinary team. This role includes an on-call component for the mental health directorate, with a 1:18 on-call roster shared by all consultants in our service.

Our team enjoys a close relationship with the Department of Psychological Medicine at the Dunedin School of Medicine, providing ready access to continuing professional development and training for students. In addition to a varied workload and exceptional quality of life, you can look forward to a culture where staff are included, valued, and respected for their expertise.

About you

Fellowship with the RANZCP or equivalent is essential. Due to the FTE nature of this role, you must be eligible for registration with the NZ Medical Council and be based in NZ. Your ability to provide clinical leadership and reliable medical input to the multidisciplinary team is pivotal. You will have a strong commitment to service user and family/whānau inclusion in service delivery and a focus on recovery, along with a sound understanding and commitment to biculturalism. A demonstrated commitment to continuing professional development and providing training to students at all levels is also required.

You will also need:

  • Competency with te ao Māori, tikanga, and te reo Māori or a commitment to starting your journey and taking ownership of your learning and growth.
  • Experience in projects/initiatives that give effect to Te Tiriti principles and frameworks, particularly as they apply in healthcare settings.
