Dunedin, New Zealand Head Medical Full time
Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist

Join us as we change the future of healthcare in Southern NZ (Permanent 1.0 FTE negotiable)

  • Close knit, supportive team
  • Additional Intellectual Disability opportunity

The SRFPS provides forensic mental health input across Otago and Southland and includes a 15-bed medium secure inpatient ward in Dunedin, forensic community teams, and regional prison and court liaison services. Depending on the area of work, typical duties may include inpatient and outpatient forensic care, court-ordered reports, prison clinics, and providing regional liaison and second opinions to colleagues.

About the role
The current configuration of this role is 0.7 FTE forensic psychiatry and 0.3 FTE intellectual disability (ID) and we can tailor this role to offer flexibility to work, develop and lead within your preferred area of forensic mental health. The ID service is comprised of up to 12 medium secure inpatient and 4 step-down locked beds with regional and community liaison across a mixed general and forensic ID population.

You will be expected to be on the service-wide general psychiatry on-call roster (supporting the on-call registrar) and participate in professional development activities such as CPD groups, journal clubs, and grand rounds. With our strong links to the Otago Medical School, you will be able to enjoy teaching medical students and registrars. Opportunities to be appointed as a Clinical Lecturer in the Department of Psychological Medicine also exist.

To be successful in this role you’ll need to be committed to quality service delivery and development and able to work effectively as a senior clinician within a multidisciplinary team.

About you

Fellowship with the RANZCP or the equivalent is essential and ideally you will already have a current registration with the NZ Medical Council.
