The Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet's (DPMC) purpose is to advance an ambitious, resilient and well-governed New Zealand. DPMC has a unique role as the trusted advisor, leader and steward of our system of executive government.
DPMC is seeking to appoint a tier three role of Director, National Security Policy Directorate (NSPD). As Director, you will be responsible for providing strategic leadership and overall management oversight for the delivery of high quality, high value policy advice to the Prime Minister, Ministers and senior officials on all DPMC-led national security policy issues.

Mō tēnei tūranga mahi | About this role
The Director NSPD, alongside other leadership team members, actively supports the Executive Director NSG in providing strategic leadership and support between DPMC, the security and intelligence community, and the wider public sector.
Within DPMC, the National Security Group (NSG) provides strategic leadership with regard to national security and DPMC's national security accountabilities. As a Group, they:

- provide independent intelligence assessments across government.
- ensure coordinated policy and strategic advice, drawing on independent intelligence assessments.
- lead national security policy advice where DPMC is the lead agency.
- ensure that the system is responsive to emerging malicious threats.
- advise Ministers on the setting of priorities for intelligence collection and analysis and the legislation governing intelligence and security agencies.
- provide strategic co-ordination for those national security issues in the National Security Strategy for which DPMC is accountable.
- are responsible for the National Security Strategy itself.

The Group works collaboratively with agencies across the sector and internationally as well as DPMC's Risk and System Governance Group.

To be successful in this role you will be able to demonstrate the following capabilities:

- Significant experience in a strategic leadership role within the public sector, including working with Ministers, chief executives and senior leaders.
- Knowledge and experience in national security environment.
- Experience in working with Ministers and senior officials in a complex environment.
- Deep understanding of operating within the policy development and the Cabinet decision making process.
- Expertise and a proven track record as an effective and successful people leader.
- High level of judgement with the ability to make effective decisions in complex situations.
- Flexibility of approach/thinking and innovative problem-solving skills.
- Ability to use a range of communication techniques to deliver messages to influence and persuade.
- Proactive and visible leadership to push and drive to make things happen.
- Prepared to take the hard decisions and be held accountable.
- Excellent interpersonal and relationship management skills, with the ability to work professionally with a wide range of people at all levels or various agencies.
- Responsiveness to Te Ao Māori, with some understanding of Tikanga Māori.

Security Requirements | Ngā Whakaritenga Haumarutanga
