Transpower owns and operates New Zealand's National Grid - the high voltage transmission network connecting areas of generation with towns and cities across New Zealand.

Our Grid Development division is responsible for identifying and conveying our future Grid needs up to 30 plus years ahead and develops transmission asset management strategies to meet our strategic objectives as outlined in Transmission Tomorrow and Whakamana i Te Mauri Hiko.

There is a significant increase in the volume of tactical engineering work which has been driven by electrification and the need to maintain the Transmission network. This requires exceptional people who are the power behind our business

**About the team**

The Tactical Engineering and Estimation Group provides the engineering support and expertise in planning, investigations, and project engineering functions within Grid Development. It ensures that Transpower's objectives are met through quality, cost-effective engineering design which is carried out by external Engineering Consultants.

The Protection & Automation team provide engineering services to Grid Development. Working closely with the Tactical Engineering Group, the Protection & Automation teams develop projects with an emphasis on cost-effectiveness and efficiency, ensuring that grid requirements are met, and risks managed.

The Protection & Automation teams are collectively responsible for:

- Engineering and asset management investigations, design, project support, technical specifications, and cost estimation covering high voltage electricity transmission, specifically Protection & Automation, and supporting primary systems with a capital value of $300-$400m pa.
- Managing a range of technical controlled documents that include technical policies, design standards, standard designs, service, and purchase specifications.
- Innovations, including new equipment and alternative designs, will be studied and implemented by the team in order to meet the demands of a quickly developing energy market as we move towards a more sustainable future.
- Providing solutions which also consider the needs of the Substations teams, Transmission Lines, Asset Planning, and Operations.

**About the opportunity - a new senior leadership role**

As a member of the Tactical Engineering & Estimation leadership team, you'll lead ~6 direct reports, including the Protection and Automation Project Engineering Manager (with a team of ~8 project engineers) two principal engineers and standards engineers who, in partnership with the engineering consultant panel, deliver design solutions and ongoing project engineering services to the grid delivery team.

Working across the business, you'll ensure the timely delivery of outputs through your team, and also through engagement of a panel of external engineering consultants to support design and engineering work on all grid projects and programmes, from conception to commissioning.

In collaboration with the Tactical Engineering leadership team, you'll identify and implement new approaches, innovations, and technologies to drive savings and optimisation, along with improved safety outcomes through engineering design.

**What will you bring?**

Your experience will include depth and breadth of leadership in commercially orientated environments. Customer centric and service delivery orientated, you'll have worked at a senior level in consultancy, engineering organisations, or organisations responsible for critical national infrastructure.

**Your CV and cover letter will clearly demonstrate**:

- ~10 or more years' experience in people leadership and line management resulting in improved organisational outcomes.
- Experience in contract engineering management, including improving the performance of outsourced consultants and service providers.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including previous experience of identifying information material to a decision, whilst navigating any associated ambiguity and maintaining forward momentum.
- Outstanding relationship management, and verbal and written communication skills, including advocacy and influencing of key stakeholders, internally and externally. You'll be comfortable communicating technical issues to non-technical audiences.
- A tertiary qualification in Engineering, ideally with associated chartership and a post graduate qualification.
