**About the opportunity**
Fonterra are on an exciting journey to ‘Decarbonise’ our operational footprint and exit coal use by 2037. This is a fantastic opportunity to join our Waitoa Utilities team and be part of a team leading the way in switching us from coal to renewable energy.
Waitoa is one of Fonterra’s flagship sites, manufacturing a number of speciality products including infant formula, stolle, UHT and organic milk powder. It is also the chosen site for Fonterra’s next signficiant step in its sustainability journey, the installation of a 30MW (45t/h) wood biomass boiler to replace a coal boiler. Construction kicked off in August and is expected to be complete by the end of 2023.
To support this initiative we have a key deliverable to recruit and build a team of capable shift engineers who are keen to play an active part in the commissioning and operating of what will be New Zealand’s largest wood biomass boiler.
The biomass engineering team will report to the Energy Centre Process Manager, employed by Fonterra and covered by the AMEA (Aviation and Marine Engineers Association) Collective Agreement.
The initial operational readiness / commissioning phase is expected to be for a period of 3-6 months (worked day shift only) and Shift Engineers will:
- Participate in Fonterra’s onboarding/familiarisation programme
- Develop and document processes and systems to effectively run the new boiler including but not limited to SOP’s, Health and Safety, and building fit outs
- Familiarise and build skills and knowledge around both the new biomass and the existing coal fired boilers and other Energy Centre assets
- Actively partake in training and the commissioning process
- Demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills
Once fully commissioned, hours will be adjusted to a 24/7 roster basis and your ongoing responsibilities will include:
- Monitoring plant performance and performing regular testing as per schedules,
- Undertaking tasks to ensure ongoing compliance requirements are met and audits are successfully completed
- Carrying out routine maintenance, overhaul and repair work.
**About you**
With your ‘can do’ and ‘make it happen’ attitude, you’ll play a major part in our long term plan to have the ‘dream team’ of multi-skilled Shift Engineers capable of running any of the biomass boiler, coal boilers and other associated plant which provide services across our multiple plants at Waitoa.
Your passion for what you do and willingness to share your knowledge with others at Waitoa and the wider co-op will be integral to supporting Fonterra’s ongoing sustainability journey.
In addition to the above key attributes and to hit the ground running, you’ll need:
- ENCHEM 4 certificate
- Proven background in powerhouse and/or utility operations preferably from a food or dairy environment
- Familiarity with refrigeration plant, compressed air and demineralisation/treatment technology and operations and automated control systems
The following while not necessary but will be an added advantage:
- Trade qualification
- Familiarity with biomass and/or bubbling fluidised bed combustion technology.
- Familiarity with steam turbines and potable water plant.
