Upper Hutt, New Zealand Upper Hutt City Council Full time

Full time | Permanent
Our city is growing and transforming. Increasingly, Upper Hutt has become a lifestyle choice for people wanting a higher quality of life - living, working and recreation closer to home and family. Upper Hutt is rich in the natural environment and education opportunities, and businesses are choosing to invest in our city.
Unsurprisingly, the built form of our city is changing too. We are looking for enthusiastic people to join the Upper Hutt City Council Building Team and be part of our influencing our city transformation.
We are recruiting for an exciting opportunity and are seeking a Building Compliance Officer to join the Building Control Services Team.
Are you seeking a new challenge where you can learn and grow, achieve better work-life balance, and be part of an open and positive team culture? Are you interested in contributing to something meaningful and having your work recognised? Do you want to join a talented team that works hard and has fun? Are you excited about going to work each day and seeing what it brings?
Then you may just be one of the team members we are looking for.
With strong commercial investment in the city, a rising housing market and continued growth, Upper Hutt City Building Team is seeking an experienced, enthusiastic, and highly motivated individual to join our expanding Building Control Services team. We are committed to customer service and need someone who can assist our customers in facilitating development in Upper Hutt while ensuring that building projects comply with legislative requirements and standards.
As a Building Compliance Officer, you will play an important role within the Building Control Services team to ensure the Council’s compliance and enforcement responsibilities under the Building Act 2004 and related legislation are met.
Your primary responsibility will be managing building warrant of fitness (BWOF) functions, which includes auditing buildings. Additionally, you will handle complaints and customer inquiries related to building compliance and enforcement, and provide support for swimming pool and earthquake-prone building functions as needed.
You will be responsible for maintaining accurate records and information databases in support of the Council’s continued status as an accredited Building Control Authority. Cumulatively your work alongside the wider team will help to transform our city.
**Ideally you will have**:
Relevant qualifications in Building Surveying, Compliance, Investigation, Enforcement, or equivalent experience in the field.
Familiarity with property information systems, the Building Act, Building Code, Building Warrant of Fitness regime, fencing of swimming pools and related legislation.
Knowledge of regulatory procedures and the Local Government environment.
Ability to interpret building plans, maps, and other graphical materials associated with development proposals.
Effective use of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook, with a capacity to quickly learn and adapt to new computer programs.
An ability to confidently and clearly communicate technical issues and concepts;
Excellent customer service focus, including good listening skills;
Good administration and organisational skills with the ability to prioritise workloads to meet statutory deadlines;
A current driver’s licence.
If you have building industry experience, are positive, committed and highly technically competent in all that you do, and you want to step up to a role that is both busy and rewarding, then you won’t get much better than our city and our team.
As a Building Compliance Officer, you will experience a full and varied workload in a supportive and dynamic working environment.
What are you waiting for? Give Leyla Paine - Building Control Services Manager a call on 04 5272 169 - we’d love to share our plans and our passion.
NOTE THAT YOU MUST HAVE THE RIGHT TO WORK IN NEW ZEALAND TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS ROLES.
