About the role
Arms Safety & Control (ASC) regulate the Arms Act 1983 and Arms Regulations 1992 to promote and control the safe possession and use of firearms and other weapons. We are modernising how we do this by introducing new ways to improve regulatory outcomes and service experience.

The Compliance Officer is an integral role in ensuring regulatory and legislative requirements are met by our firearms licence community. The Compliance Officer will support regulatory compliance and deliver a high-quality service the public deserve and expect.

Your contribution will build a culture of high performance which results in a team that is inclusive, innovative, agile, and passionate in meeting ASC outcomes.
The role is based in Kapiti. Upon appointment you will be assigned to the Compliance Team. The role is rotational and to meet the needs of ASC and your own development you may be rotated within the other teams which form ASC.

Key accountabilities
- Identify non-compliance or patterns of behaviour in order to complete thorough and accurate risk assessments of licence holder activities.
- Ensure that licence holders understand their responsibilities through education and intervention in order to improve compliance.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the Crown appeal process, including the completion of Official Information Act requests and affidavits.
- Provide accurate and relevant information and recommendations to decision makers.
- Work closely with the national and district firearms teams, frontline staff, Crown solicitors, Prosecution Services, Information Request teams, Hate Crime QA Team, Gang Intelligence Centre, Family Harm Prevention Team and other internal and external groups.
- Ensure compliance activities are completed in a timely, efficient, and effective manner to maintain regulatory compliance.
- Maintain accurate records within NIA to support the reporting of relevant activities and decisions.

Specifically, you will bring
- It is advantageous to have knowledge and experience in delivering firearms administration functions of NZ Police commensurate with the legislative requirements of the Arms Act 1983, Arms Regulations 1992 and the arms chapter in Police Instructions.
- Ability to understand New Zealand legislation including the Crimes Act 1961, Misuse of Drugs Act 1975, Wild Animal Control Act 1977 and other relevant legislation.
- Good computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft 365, NIA, iNet (not essential) and an understanding of Firearms Case Management, particularly as it relates to meeting regulatory requirements of the Arms Act 1983 and Arms Regulations 1992.
- Excellent time management skills and the ability to work in a busy environment with frequent interruptions.
- Ability to build relationships and partnerships (internal and external) where trust and confidence is built, and information is shared effectively, such as advising frontline staff of compliance processes.
- Strong analytical and written communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills and confidence so you can deal with the firearms licence community.
- Active participation in the Police High Performance Framework.
