In this newly created role, you will play a pivotal role as Practice Lead - Software Engineering to ensure we deliver our strategy in a fast, nimble and efficient way. Your role is to ensure the growth of Mercury's organisational capabilities of the practice, which includes setting the right expectations on the tools and approaches used in the practice across our squads and operational teams and developing our peoples capability to meet these needs. You will play a critical role in developing tools and mindsets aligned to the Adaptive Ways of Working.

In this role you will have 20 direct reports and will be managing your people, the craft, their growth and personal development, but will not be responsible for delivery of work. It's an exciting time to join Mercury as we move into a new operating model to take us into the future where you will be able to drive and influence the ways we work.

This role is flexible to be based in Auckland, Tauranga or Hamilton and we offer hybrid work environment. This team currently spends two days working from home, coming together to collaborate in the office the remainder of the week.

**Key responsibilities include**:

- People leadership - oversee the recruitment and professional development of the people within the practice to increase Mercury's talent pool with a focus on diversity and culture.
- Develop and grow the abilities and skills of the members of the practice, increasing overall productivity and value to squads, value streams, and projects.
- Design and manage Professional Standards and Development of practice members.
- Define the professional standards / work methodology in the practice (e.g. ensuring adoption of industry standards where applicable, building DevOps culture, aligning on tools).
- Define processes of interaction and transfer of knowledge among the members of the practice.
- Participate as an expert, or preferably identify an appropriate SME within the practice, to assist with solving complex problems related to the practice expertise with other teams across value streams.

**We are looking for**:

- Tertiary qualification in a technology domain, preferably software engineering related with at least 5+ years leading & managing large teams of people delivering software solutions in a fast-paced environment in multiple locations.
- Substantial experience in coaching, mentoring, and developing people within the Practice domain.
- Experienced at designing and implementing people initiatives, processes and learning & development programs across a business unit or discipline.
- Experienced in talent acquisition, capability building, succession planning, diversity, performance management, culture & engagement activities.
- Feel at home in a complex Technology landscape and are able to navigate.
- Excellent and effective communication and presentation skills (both written and verbal) at all levels
- Proven negotiation, problem-solving and troubleshooting skills with exceptional attention to detail
- Ability to work well under pressure and demonstrate good time management. Must be level-headed in high-stress situations and able to co-ordinate a team.
