**PURPOSE OF THE ROLE**

The Exhibitions Content Developer is responsible for producing creative and innovative content for exhibitions,
temporary displays or installations and other interpretive product at MOTAT.

The position is part of a team dedicated to devising and delivering interpretation that is based on MOTAT’s strategic
goals and aligned with our collection strengths and target audiences. The team aims to deliver interpretive tools
that will delight, captivate and inspire multi-generational audiences.

**RESPONSIBILITIES**
- Work with others in the MOTAT Team to deliver multiple interpretation projects across MOTAT.
- Gather and critically analyse interpretative information to ensure that MOTAT’s interpretation is engaging,

accurate, and tells a compelling story.
- Liaise with Collections team members, including MOTAT Volunteers, to gather information and relevant facts

about MOTAT’s collection.
- Devise and implement creative approaches to non-collection based displays using a variety of mediums such as

objects, physical interactives and multimedia.
- Peer review the work of other Exhibitions team members, to ensure accurate copy and consistent information

delivery across MOTAT’s interpretation projects.
- Contribute to the evaluation of exhibition and other interpretive proposals, as requested by the Exhibitions

Manager.
- Contribute to the development of design briefs, as required.
- Contribute to idea generation; identifying innovative approaches to interpretive processes, design and

narratives.
- Develop and maintain relationships with internal colleagues and stakeholders from across the Museum.
- Work closely with the Senior Exhibitions Curator to develop documentation such as exhibition lists.
- Work closely with members of the Museum Experience Hub, to develop marketing and communication plans

and to develop opportunities for additional events, interactivity, and curriculum links that complement the
interpretation projects.
- Model behaviour consistent with MOTAT values.
- Follow all museum policies and procedures including but not limited to Health, Safety & Security and the

Museums Aotearoa’s Code of Ethics.
- Undertake any other reasonable duties as may be required to ensure that MOTAT’s business objectives are

met.
**KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS**
- As part of a project team, successfully develop and implement initiatives such as MOTAT’s outreach program

and changeovers of installations such as The Idea Collective. This includes interpretative contribution to a
program of innovation themed experiential displays/installations on time and on budget.
- Successful completion of interpretation projects with all projects completed on time and on budget. This

includes but is not limited to:
o Story research and caption writing in support of collection based events and temporary displays.
- Enhancement of interpretation of key objects and areas (such as the Model Railway display and MOTAT’s
murals) through the development of digital or text based captions by December 2016.
- Refreshment of archival displays in the Walsh Memorial Library by December 2016.
- Monthly progress reporting to the Exhibitions Manager.

**SKILLS & EXPERIENCE**
- Demonstrated experience in public communication, ideally within a cross-generational environment.
- Experience or exposure to creative communication fields with an emphasis on strong narrative development.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to express complex processes in simple and

engaging ways.
- Highly creative with experience developing interpretive content.
- Demonstrated ability to identify, understand and respond to target audiences.
- Willingness to learn and uphold modern museum best practice.
- Good time management skills, able to prioritise workloads across multiple projects and meet deliverables.
- Ability to work quickly, to meet tight deadlines and to respond with agility to opportunities as they arise.
- Computer literate, with the ability to understand and use databases.
- Demonstrated interest in history, technology, innovation and/or engineering.
- Demonstrated skills in a fast moving environment that focuses on delivering a STEAM based visitor experience.
- Degree level qualification in history, science, innovation, technology and/or communications would be

desirable.
