Purpose of the position
At Stats NZ, we recognise climate change is one of the greatest challenges of our time. Stats NZ commits to supporting the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in accordance with government mandates. Statistics NZ set up its Carbon Neutral Programme (CNP) to ensure it meets the requirements of the Carbon Neutral Government Programme (CNGP) so that it can contribute to mitigating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and adapting to climate change.

The purpose of this role is to assist Stats NZ in meeting our CNGP commitment by developing environmental strategies and reviewing internal policies and practices. The Environmental Sustainability Specialist will also lead the Stats NZ reporting on the CNGP.

Mō te tūnga | Role Overview
This is an exciting new role where you will lead the sustainability agenda within Stats NZ. The Environmental Sustainability Specialist reports to the Head of Workplace Environments and is essential to our success of enabling meaningful sustainability and carbon emission reductions across all our sites. A big part of this role is to develop and promote the reduction and management of our carbon emissions and help the organisation switch to low-emission business operations. This includes communication between business areas, corporate functions, outside agencies, and CNGP participants so that the programme can manage delivery progress, risks, and opportunities well. This role requires both technical knowledge of low carbon buildings and experience of stakeholder engagement and collaborative working.

**This role will**:

- Lead the development implementation of plans to meet the gross emissions reduction targets for Stats NZ
- Identify gaps in existing Stats NZ policies and practices, and solutions to address
- Provide technical carbon emission reduction advice, analysis, and support to our business groups nationwide
- Report to ELT and the CNGP on our progress in reducing our emissions
- Identify resources required to promote and encourage sustainability best practices
- Engage the full support of all Stats NZ employees to reduce their carbon footprint in their day-to-day business activity.
