About the role
The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) is looking for a Principal Advisor Health, Safety and Wellbeing (HSW) to lead the design and development of key strategic frameworks, programmes and projects under the HSW Strategy vision and direction, to enhance and develop a mature safety culture that supports safe, healthy and well people across the Authority.

Reporting to the Head of HSW, the core accountability of this role is to support the Authority Board and Leadership Team in meeting their due diligence responsibilities under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015, and to provide support and direction to building the overall health, safety and wellbeing leadership understanding and capability across the organisation.

Additionally, you will be responsible for research and review of both the HSW sector in general terms, to keep the Authority’s HSW direction and analysis aligned to current thinking, and in relation to specific risks and management options to help keep our employees safe and well.

The salary band for this position is $132,950 to $186,048, with a midrange of $157,224. The starting salary will be based on the knowledge, skills and experience you may bring to the role and relativities across the organisation.

What we’re looking for
- Extensive health, safety and wellbeing experience, with a significant portion of that time in a leading strategic role, including a strong research and advisory background.
- Deep experience leading broad or specific aspects of health, safety and wellbeing performance in large, multiple-site workplace environments in Aotearoa New Zealand.
- The ability to pivot effectively between strategic perspectives and direct operational support and advice as part of a small team of specialists, within the wider People Group.
- Demonstrated understanding and alignment to current research and critical thinking in health safety and wellbeing.
- Sound knowledge and experience in risk identification, assessment and management, data analysis, rehabilitation and return to work management, incident investigation, health information development and communication, stakeholder liaison and engagement.
- Superior people skills including the ability to influence and listen well, and establish and build effective, respectful working relationships.
- Highly effective communication skills both oral and written at all levels to influence and achieve outcomes, including presenting information for a range of audiences.
- A relevant tertiary or post graduate qualification(s) in health, safety and wellbeing or similar discipline.
- Experience in the wider public sector and state sector operating environment is highly desirable. Why join us?

Domestic travel will be required as agreed to support staff at multiple locations, with occasional overnight trips.
