Transpower owns and operates New Zealand's National Grid, the High Voltage transmission network connecting areas of generation with towns and cities across New Zealand.

**About the team**

As part of the Operations Division, the Grid Operations team are responsible for the National Grid Operations Centres (NGOC) in Auckland and Christchurch, performing key activities and service functions such as:

- Controlling the real-time operation of national grid assets including operation of the HVDC link
- Managing asset availability to the System Operator for planned and unplanned outages, in line with the Grid Owner's CODE compliance obligations
- Managing unplanned event communications and reporting (customers, Police, Electricity Authority, and other Transpower groups)
- Monitoring via national SCADA, grid asset status and ensuring they are operated within their rated capability
- Controlling core grid and regional equipment independently as and when required for safety and asset health reasons
- Maintaining effective relationships both internally and with customers (line companies, generators, and direct connects), and service providers

**About the opportunity**

We have a vacancy for an adaptable and conscientious Grid Asset Controller who will work on a roster basis including nights and weekends as part of the collaborative NGOC team based in Christchurch. Transpower typically operates the following 12-hour shift pattern: 2 day then 2 night shifts, alternating 6.00am then 6.00pm starts, with 3.5 days off between the next round of shifts.

You will be supported and encouraged as you work to complete a circa one-two year training pathway to competency.

**To be considered, you will demonstrate the ability to progress through learning at pace, and the desire and flexibility to enjoy a shift-based work environment. Your previous work history will illustrate**:

- Minimum 2 - 3 years of experience delivering high-quality work in a critical, process-supported and decision-orientated environment
- Excellent written and verbal communications capability and service orientation
- Innate ability to establish and maintain positive relationships and influence people

Highly regarded, but not essential, are any of the following:

- A tertiary qualification in engineering or relevant science
- A developed understanding of engineering principals
- Operation of high voltage equipment
- Well-developed understanding of NZ power system operations, codes, grid operation management and power system safety issues

Due to the nature of the role, it's important that you can remain calm and composed when presented with high pressure situations.
