Landowner Relations Team Leader

Christchurch, Canterbury, New Zealand Transpower Full time
Lead an experienced and collaborative national team

  • Ensure excellent relationships with our 30,000+ landowners
  • Play a key role in enabling New Zealand's electrified future
Work with public and private landowners, to enable the efficient development, operation, and maintenance of critical infrastructure.

Transpower is a State-Owned Enterprise that owns and operates the National Grid - the transmission network made up of over $5b of assets that carries electricity around the country.

Assets include nearly 12,000km of high voltage transmission lines, 60km of underground and submarine cable, over 40,000 supporting towers and poles, over 175 substations, and nearly 2000 transformers which are situated the length and breadth of the country.

Most of the assets that make up the grid are located on private land with varying land uses, such as farms, forestry, horticulture, and in public conservation areas.

It's essential that we work closely with landowners to ensure we maintain access to our assets for maintenance and projects.

About the team
The Landowner Relations and Property Team ensures Transpower maintains access to its assets through effective relationships with its landowners. The team negotiates property rights and access arrangements for Transpower's assets and ensures property rights and relationships are maintained.

The team works closely with our 'grid' divisions and external service providers to facilitate new customer connections, support access to land to deliver projects, and for the maintenance of our assets.

About the opportunity

Preferably based in Wellington, or for the right applicant at one of our other Transpower office locations by mutual agreement, you'll lead a high-performing and long serving team of ~7 who partner with our landowners and service providers to enable Transpower to access property for the development, construction, operation, maintenance, and decommissioning of the grid.

Working with our Landowner Relations and Property Manager this role will fully utilise your skills and experience in relationship management and diplomacy to engage with various internal and external stakeholders to ensure a seamless landowner experience.

As a people leader with an understanding of property rights, you'll deepen your understanding of our fascinating sector and what it takes to build national critical infrastructure.

You'll ensure landowner needs are factored into business decisions and enjoy developing enduring solutions that lead to mutually beneficial outcomes.

Naturally curious and customer centric you'll anticipate and identify risks/issues quickly and work at pace to address these using well-developed influencing and dispute management skills.

Our workload is growing as we look to meet the challenges of accelerated electrification and there is opportunity to build further capability and grow the team over time as we move to a more sustainable and decarbonised energy future.

What will you bring?
To be considered, your CV, cover letter, and experience to date will demonstrate:

  • Proven people leadership experience ideally for a team working cross enterprise and externally
  • Experience and working knowledge of landrelated regulatory frameworks and legal principles
  • Outstanding communication skills, including advocacy and influencing both verbal and written to be able to communicate complex technical issues to nontechnical audiences
  • Demonstrated ability to understand stakeholder needs and requirements, and identify and develop solutions which work for both parties
  • Comfort with iwi engagement and Tikanga Māori

While not essential, highly regarded will be:

  • Experience/working knowledge of the Electricity Act, Public Works Act, and Resource Management Act
  • A relevant tertiary qualification e.g., property, legal, commercial

As you will cover a large geographical area you must have a full NZ Drivers Licence and be prepared to travel occasionally.

Why join us at Transpower
It's exciting The scale, criticality, and complexity of Transpower is intellectually stimulating

Our people from over 28 nationalities freely share their experience and knowledge, so there are endless on the job learning opportunities and a broad range of perspectives all connected by the shared purpose _Whakamana i te mauri hiko tū mai Aotearoa_
