About the role
The Haumanu Reo ā-Waha Speech
Language Therapy (SLT) team at Christchurch Health Campus would like to hear
from NZ Registered Speech Language Therapists who are passionate about working with
the adult population in the acute +/- outpatient hospital setting.
We are a dedicated Speech
Language Therapy team working to provide high quality evidence based clinical
care and innovative practice in a busy and dynamic health setting. The SLT
service offers supportive team environments with experienced colleagues,
regular clinical supervision and a wide range of opportunities for continuing
professional development.
The adult SLT team provides a
service to all clinical areas in the acute hospital setting, including, but not
limited to; general medicine, general surgery, respiratory, stroke,
neurology/neurosurgery, orthopaedics, cardiothoracics, oncology, ORL, head
& neck cancer and ICU. We also provide inpatient and outpatient videofluoroscopy
and Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) services, as well as
outpatient head & neck cancer, radiotherapy and voice services.
This role is fixed term from 1st
May 2023 to 8th September 2023.
Ideally, the successful
ORL, head & neck cancer, voice and FEES. The role being covered by this fixed term role is an
Expert role (as per the South Island Allied & Public Health Career
Framework), therefore there is the opportunity for someone who is at an Expert
level to further develop their skills within this fixed term role, however this
is not a necessary requirement.

with an interest and experience across any clinical areas within an adult acute

In this role, you will be responsible for:

  • Implementing
assessment procedures according to Speech Language Therapy protocols and
professional standards;

  • Establishing
and implementing treatment plans and interventions in consultation with the
multi-disciplinary team, the patient and their family/whanau;

  • Educating
patients, their family/whanau, and the wider multi-disciplinary team on
relevant information to facilitate wellbeing;

  • Working
with colleagues to implement quality improvement and patient safety initiatives
to meet the strategic goals of the organisation;

  • Provision
of Speech Language Therapy services across different clinical areas within the
acute hospital setting; the exact clinical areas you will work in will be
negotiated based on your experience and the service needs;

  • Excellent knowledge of the unique Aotearoa
context and Te Tiriti o Waitangi, including demonstration of Māori and cultural
responsiveness;

  • Commitment to the provision of quality care for
patients and their whānau;

  • Strong skills in the assessment and management
of swallowing and communication disorders in the adult population;

  • Excellent communication skills and the ability
to work effectively as a supportive and reliable team member to ensure the best
health outcomes for people;

  • Independent management of a caseload and excellent
skills in time management, prioritisation, flexibility and the ability to adapt
quickly to meet changes in clinical demands;

  • Registration
with the New Zealand Speech-language Therapists
Association (NZSTA) is essential.

  • Experience
in the acute hospital setting is preferred;

  • Experience
and competency in videofluoroscopy is
desirable;

  • Experience
with Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation
of Swallowing (FEES) is desirable.
