The Haumanu Reo ā-Waha Speech
Language Therapy team at Christchurch Health Campus is looking for a NZ Registered
Speech Language Therapist to join us to work in the intensive care unit (ICU).
In this role you will be a key
member of the multidisciplinary team working in the ICU. The Christchurch
Hospital ICU is a 24 bed unit covering all medical and surgical specialties,
including spinal and burns. There are confirmed plans for additional ICU beds
later this year. The ICU has a strong Allied Health presence, including
integration of Kaiāwhina into service delivery. This role will be supported by
the SLT Regional Allied Health Critical Care Educator and
the wider SLT team.
As a key member of the Speech
Language Therapy team you will also work with patients across the general medical and surgical wards as required. You will have a proven track record of working as an autonomous SLT
within a multi/interdisciplinary team and
demonstrate a genuine interest and experience working with patients and their
whanau in the intensive care setting.

In this role, you will be responsible for:

  • Providing
holistic and culturally appropriate Speech Language Therapy services within the
intensive care setting;

  • Implementing
assessment procedures according to Speech Language Therapy protocols and
professional standards;

  • Establishing
and implementing treatment plans and interventions in consultation with the
multidisciplinary team, the patient and their family/whanau;

  • Educating
patients, their family/whanau, and the wider multidisciplinary team on relevant
information to facilitate wellbeing;

  • Working
with colleagues to implement quality/service improvements and patient safety
initiatives to meet the strategic goals of the organisation.

  • Demonstration of cultural responsiveness, a commitment to Te
Tiriti o Waitangi and to the provision of quality care for patients;

  • Demonstrated
skills in the assessment and management of swallowing and communication
disorders in the adult population;

  • Excellent
communication skills and the ability to work effectively as a supportive
and reliable team member to ensure the best health outcomes for people;

  • Independent management of a caseload and advanced skills in
time management, prioritisation, flexibility and the ability to adapt
quickly to meet changes in clinical demands;

  • The ability to work collaboratively across a
multi-disciplinary team;

  • At least two years experience working in the acute
hospital setting;

  • Experience working in a critical care/intensive
care setting is desirable;

  • Experience and competency in videofluoroscopy is
essential;

  • Experience and/or exposure to working with
patients with tracheostomy (minimum Level 1 NZSTA Tracheostomy competency) is
required;

  • Experience working with patients on mechanical
ventilation is desirable;

  • Experience with Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation
of Swallowing (FEES) is desirable;

  • Registration
with the New Zealand Speech-language Therapists
Association (NZSTA) is essential.
