Mō te tūnga | About the role;


Our Community Speech Language Therapy staff work within interdisciplinary community-based therapy teams, while also benefiting from Speech Language Therapy professional leadership and collegial support.

Our Speech Language Therapists provide skilled assessment, management and rehabilitation of a broad range of swallowing and communication disorders.

The Community Stroke Rehabilitation Service works exclusively with clients who have experienced a stroke, primarily within their own homes and communities.

There is also involvement in a Videofluoroscopy service based at Burwood Hospital and opportunities to include telehealth within your practice.

This newly developed Advanced Speech Language Therapist role will provide evidence-informed and culturally safe practice.


In this predominantly clinical role, you will implement a variety of service delivery methods including; virtual care, outpatient clinics and home visits as clinically indicated.

While based administratively at either Princess Margaret Hospital or Burwood, this position provides care to the community across the Canterbury region.


Using your extensive clinical skills and knowledge, you will work alongside operational and clinical leaders to support the continuous improvement of the CSRS Speech-Language Therapy Service.

Developing opportunities to maximise the skills of our unregistered workforce is also a focus.


This role will also include supporting service development, clinical education and training, fostering relationships within Health NZ Waitaha and with wider networks will be a vital aspect of achieving these objectives.

In this role, you will be responsible for:

  • Providing comprehensive assessments, evaluations and therapy in accordance with policies, procedures and standards of practice for Speech Language Therapy
  • Educating and providing resources to patients and their families/whanau/caregivers as well as to colleagues in the interdisciplinary team
  • Liaising and coordinating with a wide variety of communitybased services
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with an ability to work alongside, influence and communicate with a range of personalities
  • Ensuring appropriate documentation and patient records are updated and maintained.
  • Contributing to quality service provision within the community teams and wider Speech Language Therapy service
  • Ability to flexibly integrate interventions using problem solving and robust communication, whilst being led by your client's goals.
  • Can use clinical expertise to lead change alongside clinical and operational leaders
  • Demonstrates ability to inspire and motivate colleagues

Your skills will include:

  • Ability to complete thorough assessments and be able to flexibly integrate interventions using problem solving and robust communication whilst being led by your client's goals
  • Ability to use objective assessment tools
  • Ability to work within an interdisciplinary team and communicate well with external agencies and community services
  • Experience in working with patients with significant comorbidities would also be an advantage
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Augmentative and Alternative Communication methods
  • Specific skills in utilising Risk Feeding pathways
  • You will be registered with NZSTA
  • A full drivers licence is required
