The principal duties of the role will be to lead the Journalism major in the Bachelor of Communication and the Graduate Diploma in Journalism.

This requires coordinating and teaching the core Journalism courses at 200 and 300 level, including organising internships and production experiences.

Other responsibilities will include pastoral care of students, administrative tasks, outreach, and supervision of tutors and postgraduate students.

The University is committed to developing biculturally competent, community-engaged and globally aware graduates and teaching that supports students to fulfil their role as contributors to society, and this approach is central to the journalism programme.

To be successful in this role, you will have expert knowledge in the field of journalism, including at least 10 years' experience in news journalism, and a demonstrated record of achievement in journalism.

You will have a thorough knowledge of or engagement with current media industry practices, standards, and technologies, including technical skills and knowledge associated with broadcast, print or online journalism and its regulation.

You will have established networks in New Zealand newsrooms, or a passion for building those networks.

You will be expected to design, develop, and maintain a relevant journalism curriculum that both serves and challenges journalism, and undertake research leadership that also informs teaching and curriculum development.

You will have experience in teaching, training, or mentoring, ideally with experience at tertiary level, and experience working with diverse groups.

You will demonstrate a high level of critical thinking and analytical skills in relation to journalism, evidenced in either academic or industry publication or in other relevant contributions to knowledge, and will be expected to establish a research agenda in journalism and related fields.

You will be motivated to promote UC's values which include whanaungatanga - valuing people and their differences; manaakitanga - extending care and empowering others; and tiakitanga - enhancing and nurturing our resources.
