The Research Data Manager Specialist for the Christchurch Heart Institute (CHI) is the groups primary data management and IT expert.

This role is responsible for sourcing, maintaining and upgrading the groups' Laboratory Information System (LIMS), currently Starlims, along with any hardware, software, support and updates required for the system to run smoothly.

Working closely with CHI management, software vendors and Te Whatu Ora Waitaha, Canterbury IT Staff requires excellent problem solving and communication skills, resilience, attention to detail and a can-do attitude is a must

  • Relevant university degree.
  • Previous data management and relevant IT experience in a multidisciplinary institutional setting of at least 10 years duration.
  • A track record of working independently and leading complex, multistakeholder projects over long timelines and managing multiple projects.
  • Recent relevant knowledge of and experience with MSSQL Server, including writing scripts, creating and updating views and tables, user permissions and backup/restore processes.
  • Familiarity and experience with the Microsoft Windows Server environment and software, Microsoft Windows pc environment and software, familiarity with virtual servers and software, understanding of how to work with local area networks and network drives.
  • Experience and proven ability in the design, construction and maintenance of relational databases.
  • Good understanding of database platforms, particularly MSSQL, with a reasonable understanding of network requirements, server software etc.

The Department houses over 100 academic researchers, many of whom have clinical roles in the Te Whatu Ora - Waitaha.

The Department is physically housed in Christchurch Hospital and has close links to other departments in the University (including Pathology & Biomedical Science) and hospital Departments (including Cardiology and the Emergency Department) and throughout the Christchurch and regional hospital campuses.


The Christchurch Heart Institute employs experts in cardiology, genetics, biochemistry and physiology, and is the only integrated 'bench to bedside to community' cardiovascular research group in New Zealand.
