We would like to call for expressions of interest for a postdoctoral researcher in the Faculty of Education School of Teacher Education to support us our research project _Pāngarau Unleashed: a multiple case study of de-streaming secondary mathematics_, led by David Pomeroy, Kay-Lee Jones, and Sara Tolbert funded by the Teaching and Learning Research Initiative (TLRI), NZCER_._ The broad aim of Pāngarau Unleased is to support a movement towards effective non-streamed practices in secondary mathematics.
We define 'effective' practice as 1) improving mathematics learning, across the prior achievement spectrum; 2) supporting Māori to succeed in mathematics as Māori; 3) not increasing teachers' workloads in the long term; 4) having credibility in the eyes of the wider school community._ Our more specific aims are:_
- To support our five school and pā wānanga partners to further enhance their nonstreamed mathematics teaching practices
- To produce case studies of nonstreamed practices, that other schools can learn from
- To better understand culturally empowering teaching practices in pāngarau mathematics
- To support school leaders in the management of effective destreaming transitions
- To attend to and amplify rangatahi and whānau experiences of streamed and nonstreamed mathematics
- To evaluate our own collaborative model of supporting change
Contract details
The position will be approx.
15 to 22 hours per week (negotiable), with work commencing on or around 1 May 2023, and likely to end around 30 Nov 2023, with the option to renew by mutual agreement until no later than 31 March 2025.
Pay rates
$23 - $29 (Research Assistant, graduate to experienced)
$30-$35 per hour (Research Associate)
$30-$45 per hour (Post-Doctoral Fellow)
Qualifications required:
Ph.
D. or Ed.
D. Students who have submitted their thesis but not yet graduated may apply.
Tasks and experience needed or desired:
Tasks
- assist with data collection (classroom observations, interviews)
- collate and organise a large qualitative data set
- assist in coding and analysis of data (largely meeting and interview transcripts)
- conduct literature reviews and contribute to other related manuscript preparation tasks
- assist with planning of research meetings, including communicating with valued partners outside of UC
- periodic travel to field sites for data collection and to attend research meetings with external partners
Experience
- Good organisational skills and initiative
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work independently and within a team
- Experience analysing qualitative data
- Experience with or capacity to upskill in use of NVivo would be an advantage
- Experience with writing academic peerreviewed publications in the social sciences, preferably Education, would be an advantage
