Āu Mahi | What You Will Do


The Research Assistant position in the Muslim Diversity Study offers an exciting opportunity for you to be part of the first longitudinal study of values and attitudes of Muslims by a team of Muslim researchers in New Zealand.

Your primary responsibilities will involve engaging with the Muslim community in New Zealand to create awareness about the study and actively encourage potential participants to attend the inaugural talks, subsequently resulting in questionnaire completion.

This means you need to be a dependable person with great community networking experience.

You might also need to provide support in understanding if needed, explaining the project's purpose, and ensuring participants complete the questionnaires accurately.

Your role will be instrumental in gathering valuable data and fostering community involvement in the study.


As a Research Assistant, your focus will be on community engagement, creating awareness about the study, and providing assistance to participants as necessary.

Your attention to detail, excellent communication skills, and ability to build rapport with the Muslim community will be key to the success of the project.

By taking on this position, you will contribute to advancing knowledge of Muslim attitudes, values, and diversity in New Zealand while actively engaging with the community.

  • Muslim Community Affiliation: A strong affiliation with the Muslim community is essential for understanding the cultural nuances, establishing rapport, and effectively engaging with community members during data collection.
  • Bilingual Communication: Proficiency in one ethnic Muslim language, in addition to English, is ideal. This enables effective communication with participants who may need to understand the questionnaire items, ensuring accurate understanding and data collection.

Mahi Ngātahi | Who You Will Work With


You will being working with the Muslim Diversity Study principal investigator, Dr Usman Afzali, and a team of distinguished researchers and collaborators from various universities in New Zealand.

Our goal is to gain a comprehensive understanding of Muslim diversity in New Zealand and investigate factors that contribute to the flourishing and meaning making in the Muslim community.

Through rigorous research and community engagement, the project aims to inform policies and initiatives that promote the well-being and empowerment of Muslims in the country.

The core research team will be based in Christchurch and will travel to the different regions as required. We will therefore need to be able to contact you on a personal device on occasions.
