English & Mandarin Speaking Bilingual Stargazing Guide

Permanent full-time position in Lake Tekapo.

$26 - $30 per hour (based on previous experience), minimum 30 hours per week.

  • Are you passionate about providing an outstanding tourism activity for visitors to Lake Tekapo?
  • Are you passionate and knowledgeable about astronomy, science, and space?
  • Do you have the ability and/or experience to talk to, and entertain groups of guests?
We are looking for an experienced tour guide to join our stargazing team.


You will be responsible for delivering stargazing tours in both English & Mandarin to groups of up to 10 people.

You will be responsible for their entire stargazing journey.

You will meet them for check-in, drive them to our stargazing location, deliver a 75-minute stargazing experience that includes teaching guests how to use telescopes and capturing photographs of them with the stars in the background.

You will also need to answer any questions that your group has.

Must have requirements for this role are:

  • An excellent level of both spoken and written English & Mandarin. Additional languages are desired but not essential.
  • Previous experience in tour guiding or performing in front of groups of people.
  • Previous experience in astronomy or another similar field of scientific study.
  • A full New Zealand driver's license.

Applicants may also consider the following points:

  • Our tours take place during the night so previous experience working nightshift is desirable.
  • You will be educating guests about a scientific field of study so qualifications in a scientific field is desirable.
  • Lake Tekapo is an Alpine environment, and our tours take place outside during the night. Any previous experience working in colder climates is desirable.
  • You will be required to use, and instruct the use of large telescopes, previous knowledge of telescope use and/or maintenance is desirable.
  • You will be required to take photographs of guests during the tour, previous experience in photography, particularly astrophotography, including the use of lightroom and photoshop is desirable.
