About the role


The Media and Communications group at New Zealand Police plays an important role in communicating to our staff and the public about what is happening in our organisation.

We have a fantastic opportunity for an experienced speech writer with excellent communication skills to join our team.


You will be working alongside a vibrant team to make sure our written communications are engaging and aligned with our vision to be the safest country.

The role is based at Police National Headquarters (PNHQ) in Wellington.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Provide specialist highquality professional writing services to the Commissioner, Police Executive and senior management.
  • Ensure all speeches and/or presentations are high quality and consistently communicate Police's key messages.
  • Help to communicate the vision, purpose and values of New Zealand Police to internal and external stakeholders, and the general public.
  • Undertake other writing/communication tasks and contribute to the overall writing capability of the Media & Communications team.
  • Ensure written communications are engaging and aligned with the wider organisation's goals e.g. culture change, rolemodelling Police values, supporting the Police High Performance Framework.
  • Provide support in emergency or crisis events as required (note: this may require flexibility to work varied hours at short notice).

Along with experience writing speeches, these skills would be handy:

  • Previous internal communications experience working for a large, diverse organisation.
  • Understanding/experience of navigating the machinery of government.
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage competing demands effectively.
