The Office of the Chief Justice seeks a senior communications advisor who is above all things an excellent writer.

You will have a strong understanding of how the courts and judiciary operate, and of New Zealand's constitutional arrangements, the separation of powers, and the judicial arm of government.


You will be responsible for a variety of writing projects - from speeches to reports, from articles for key external audiences, to communications to the judiciary.

You will have a flair for writing meaningful, intelligent and engaging content that aligns with the areas of focus of judicial leadership, and that increases public understanding of the work in the courts.


You will enjoy the challenge of understanding the complexities of this unique institution, and how to communicate them plainly and with flair.


Ō pūkenga/Skills and Experience**- Excellent writing skills, with demonstrable experience, of being able to synthesise complex materials into engaging content, and to consider diverse audiences.

  • A strong understanding of how the courts and judiciary operate, and of New Zealand's constitutional arrangements, the separation of powers, and the judicial arm of government.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a range of people.
  • Demonstrated ability to use initiative and work independently, making informed decisions about priorities and taking personal responsibility for achieving objectives.
  • Respect for and understanding of tikanga Māori.
  • Knowledge of te reo Maori would be advantageous.

Mō mātou/About us**The Office of the Chief Justice (Te Tari) | Te Tari Toko i te Tumu Whakawā, supports the judiciary at the constitutional interface between the judiciary and executive. Te Tari is financially supported by the Ministry of Justice but remains otherwise independent.


The judiciary as an institution, and the Chief Justice and Heads of Bench as its leaders, have a unique responsibility to maintain the public's trust and confidence in the courts and the principles underpinning the justice system.

The Communications and Engagement Team (which includes our events team) supports the judiciary to fulfil this responsibility by increasing the transparency and accessibility of the work of the courts, and improving public and media's understanding of the constitutional role of the judiciary and the principles that underpin our justice system.

The judicial events calendar is an essential strand to this work.
