We have two types of role available:
Deployment Trainee Customs Officer- sitting within our deployment model
- works a 6 on 3 off shift pattern (*) as explained below
Static Trainee Customs Officer - typically works a Monday to Friday pattern with occasional on-call or weekend work. These roles stay within the area to which they are assigned and do not rotate. You will receive the same training as noted below.

Deployment Trainee Customs Officers:
are rotated through the different operational areas of Customs including airports, marine, client services and inspections. Throughout your career in Customs, Officers are expected to continually expand their technical and leadership skills. Learning opportunities include specialist technical skills through to university level study in security and border management.
We will train you for the role - which includes both on the job and classroom training including Officer Safety Tactics (self-defence) training
As a Customs Officer your base salary will be $54,068 per annum. An additional allowance dependent on the role you are assigned to, is paid of up to $14,587 per annum.
The maximum shift allowance is paid for working within deployment where you will be working a range of shifts including weekends, nights and public holidays on a 6 on and 3 days off roster.
You will know your shift pattern in advance, so you can plan your life around work, not work around your life.
Working for NZ Customs | Mahi ki te Mana Ārai o Aotearoa
To join Te Mana Ārai in any role you must be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident*.
You must have a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed as appropriate by the New Zealand Security Intelligence Service towards a recommendation of suitability for security clearance at a higher level.
Successful applicants are also required to pass a medical assessment and drug test and must hold a full NZ Drivers' licence.
Customs does not currently require new employees to be up to date vaccinated against COVID-19 as a condition of employment.
