Mō tēnei tūranga | About this role


As part of the newly established Education Workforce Programme Delivery team, the Financial Planning and Reporting role is primarily responsible for maintaining the accuracy and reliability of financial models and reporting across the Education Workforce group.

You will be working with a passionate programme delivery team, tracking and reporting on resource across multiple, complex programmes and projects.

You will be working to build, operate and improve key systems and services to create the necessary financial visibility across the group that allows for a holistic view of the work programme.


As well as adding value to financial information by analysing and presenting it in ways that provide insight and a stronger basis for making tactical and strategic decisions, you will also support and build capability across Education Workforce to ensure that programmes and projects are delivered effectively, efficiently and on time.


Main responsibilities will include:

  • Deliver fit for purpose high quality monitoring mechanisms that enable effective decisions
  • Work closely with project managers to manage resource and flag financial risks and issues
  • Provide analytical insights including informationvisuals to support business understanding
  • Review, validate and critique business cases and reports to Ministers with financial implications
  • Provide the Manager, Education Workforce, with a consolidated financial view across the team to support decisionmaking

Mōhou ake | About you
To excel in this role, you will be able to translate financial and operational insights into actionable business strategies. You'll be able to leverage data to uncover trends, risks, and opportunities, informing effective decision-making.


Proficiency in MS Excel and finance software will be important, as will your experience in budgeting, resource allocation, and strategic cost management.

You will have a sound grasp of public sector processes, accountability, and performance-driven decision-making and your comprehension of government financial mechanisms and fiscal timelines will contribute to your overall success.

To be successful in the role, you'll be working collaboratively with key stakeholders, developing relationships at all levels.


You will demonstrate knowledge of, or a willingness to gain an understanding of Te Ao Māori and promote tikanga and Te Reo Māori.

You will also have knowledge of, or a willingness to gain an appreciation of te Tiriti o Waitangi (the Treaty of Waitangi) as it applies in the public sector.

  • An accounting or financial qualification
  • Ability to translate financial and operational information into practical business outcomes.
  • Effective time management skills and ability to work effectively and collaboratively as an effective team member
  • Ability to write concise and clear reports
  • Proven experience in effectively monitoring and managing project and program budgets, ensuring financial alignment and successful delivery throughout various stages
  • Excellent analytical skills clarity of thinking, ability to gather information
