Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role
This role sits within the Industry and Innovation Unit within the Development Economy and Prosperity Division.

The division is a key part of the Pacific and Development Group of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

We are increasingly looking to identify and explore opportunities to achieve development impact through innovation, private sector engagement and impact finance.


The Senior Adviser Agricultural Value Chains will utilise experience, knowledge and networks to help MFAT support commercially sustainable international development outcomes benefiting farmers, growers and communities in developing countries.

Senior Advisers are expected to provide insights and advice on agricultural value chains and private sector.

They will be expected to develop and lead complex initiatives in their area of expertise, to analyse market systems and to develop, articulate and refine sectoral focus areas.


Key accountabilities will include:

  • Providing strategic insights and advice to support MFAT's international development partnerships across agriculture and private sector development
  • Collaborating with other sector leads (with a focus on agriculture and private sector) to identify opportunities.
  • Engagement with MFAT Posts, MFAT Auckland office, other NZ Inc. agencies to advance MFAT's development priorities in the Pacific.
  • Contributing to the division's delivery of planned and agreed projects to realise strategic priorities and high level outcomes.


The appointment range for this role is $117,541 to $138,283 total remuneration including employer contribution to kiwisaver - negotiable depending on experience.

We are looking for someone with experience working on international development projects/programmes that aim to support agricultural development through taking a private sector development or "market systems development" approach.

Applicants need not have tertiary qualifications in agriculture, but should be able to demonstrate a solid understanding and experience of venture building, private sector development, value chains and/or agricultural development in a developing country context.
