How would you enjoy partnering with dedicated conservation experts across Aotearoa on critical and rewarding mahi, to investigate and improve the way we deliver our Conservation Outcomes?

The Department have an exciting opportunity for a highly skilled internal auditor to bring their experience in internal audit and an innovative mindset to help us deliver an integrated approach to assurance activities within the organisation.

As Internal Auditor, you will take a strategic, enterprise-view across multi-disciplined, technically diverse, and highly specialised functions that deliver conservation outcomes for Aotearoa, New Zealand.

You will directly support the Manager Internal Audit to drive the internal audit programme and lead work across the business to embed the Internal Auditors professionally recognised Three Lines assurance model across the Department.


The position will be focussed on:

  • Provide expert advice and guidance across the Department of Conservation to ensure systems and processes are well designed and the controls operating as intended
  • Support the Manager Internal Audit to provide the Risk and Assurance Committee with the appropriate periodic Audit Plan and framework updates
  • Support the Manager Internal Audit to drive the implementation of the internal audit strategy
  • Conduct inquiries as required while conforming to IIA standards.
  • Operate closely with the Risk and Resilience team to achieve integrated assurance advice at senior levels within the Department.


Make an impact through this role by influencing internal policies for; Fraud, Risk Management, Conflict of Interest, Gifts and Hospitality, and Protected Disclosures.

The role requires a risk and assurance professional, with experience gained in either the commercial or public sector environment. You will have a keen risk radar and be comfortable operating in complex environments.
If you have the following attributes, we are keen to hear from you:

  • A relevant graduate degree in accountancy, business information systems or finance or IIA Graduate Certificate in Internal Auditing
  • Detailed knowledge of the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) Professional Practices Framework and associated standards
  • Experience in providing advice and expertise to independent Risk and Assurance Committee, senior management and colleagues across the Department
  • Understanding of tikanga and Treaty of Waitangi principles
  • Well
- developed understanding of systems thinking

  • Able to think strategically and see linkages between different streams of work
  • Relevant professional memberships such as the Institute of Internal Auditors
  • Experience in Central Government systems, processes, and protocols
  • Able to coach and develop others
  • Current full driving licence required

The Conservation Assurance Team, within the Public Affairs Group, works across the organisation in conjunction with DOC Leaders to provide independent, objective advice and information that gives us (DOC) confidence in the way we work and operate.

This is achieved through the Unit's Internal Audit work programme, and leadership for embedding the Department's approach to risk management.

The team is a primary point of co-ordination and assessment across DOC's internal audit programme, risk, assurance and inquiries.

We are a close-knit team that enjoy diversity in personality and thought, and are a fun bunch that know how to have a good time while delivering high quality work.

Based in Wellington and Christchurch offices, we have high integrity when dealing with the sensitive topics in our work and are encouraging of open dialogue, challenging ideas and shaking up our approaches.
