The New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) spend every hour of every day, 365 days a year, contributing to the defence, security and well-being of Aotearoa.


The role of the Internal Audit | Arotake ā-roto team is to provide independent, meaningful, and insightful assurance services to the organisation.

As a partner across the organisation the Internal Audit team adds real value, going beyond compliance to identify opportunities for continuous improvement, and works proactively to help manage risk.


Your work will touch on the wide range of areas within NZDF - from camps and bases, overseas posts, governance systems, through to the provisioning of health services, and the management of complex logístical and supply chain arrangements.

Reporting to the Chief Internal Auditor, you'll work collaboratively within a team of 13 auditors to lead the Principal Audit Unit.


You will:
- manage four direct reports to deliver high-quality, strategically relevant advisory and internal audit services across NZDF
- coach, develop and mentor your team to promote career progression and grow the functionality across your team
- be an advocate and champion for the internal audit team; promoting their role as trusted advisors who partner for success and continuous improvement
- champion hybrid ways of working that promote a flexible, agile approach to work.

The ideal person for this role will offer:

  • senior level of experience in an audit/assurance or business advisory role
- polished project management skills with a proven ability to manage and deliver concurrent projects
- excellent communication skills, with an ability to work with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders
- an ability to deliver meaningful reports for diverse audiences that are clear, engaging and stimulate action
- demonstrable success leading a team, with expertise and passion for coaching and developing growing professionals, and
- preferably, membership of a relevant membership body.
