In their role, the Business Advisor will work within the Office of the Hautū and focus on the following objectives:

Develop and Provide Reporting:

The Business Advisor works to develop and provide reporting mechanisms that enable managers and the leadership team to make informed, real-time decisions.

They ensure that the reporting is accurate, relevant, and timely, providing the necessary information for effective decision-making.

Mature and Embed a Risk Culture: The Business Advisor plays a key role in maturing and embedding a risk culture within the organization. They proactively support complex work streams by identifying and addressing potential risks and developing strategies to mitigate them. This helps the organization to operate with awareness and preparedness, minimizing the negative impacts of risks.

Support Managers and Leadership:
The Business Advisor supports managers and the leadership team by being genuinely open to listening.

They provide a supportive and collaborative environment where ideas, concerns, and feedback from managers and leaders are heard and valued.

This ensures that their perspectives are taken into account when making decisions and shaping the organization's direction.

Future-proof Systems and Processes: The Business Advisor contributes to future-proofing the busy policy group by harnessing systems and processes to work smarter and more efficiently. They identify opportunities for improvement, streamline workflows, and implement technologies or methodologies that enhance productivity and effectiveness. This helps the organization adapt to changing needs and challenges in a sustainable manner.

By focusing on these objectives, the Business Advisor plays a critical role in facilitating informed decision-making, promoting a proactive risk culture, fostering open communication, and driving efficiency within the policy group.

Mōhou ake | About you

You will have experience working across complex organisations, as well as a track record of developing and embedding business improvement systems that encompass a broad spectrum of stakeholder views.

You will demonstrate knowledge of, or a willingness to gain an understanding of Te Ao Māori and promote tikanga and Te Reo Māori.

You will also have knowledge of, or a willingness to gain an appreciation of te Tiriti o Waitangi (the Treaty of Waitangi) as it applies in the public sector.


You will also demonstrate:

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with customers and gain their trust and respect
- strong problem solving ability, particularly when dealing with complex issues
- an ability to operate in a complex and ambiguous environment

Mātau rōpū ake | About our ministry, group, and team

At Te Tāhuhu o te Mātauranga, we work to provide services and support nationally, regionally and locally to the education sector, and in some cases, directly to ākonga and whanau.

To better deliver on this, we are currently undergoing an organisational design change. The transition phase to improve the way we deliver our purpose will be complete in 2023.
